Turns out we only got rained out one day, and Wednesday (between restaurants of course) we got in a great hike up to a bluff with yet another beautiful vista. MPD, who pretty much morphed into a wild beast for most of this trip, didn't go for the backpack--he started shrieking and head-butting the back of Bill's head when we began the hike--so he and Bill stayed behind.
Overall, the rained-out, flat-tire, too-many-restaurants, late-night-fax machine, vacation-with-a-screaming-toddler turned out pretty great. We're looking forward to camping* for two whole weeks next year! :)
*I, of course, will be reserving the "mommy-and-me" hotel room again. MPD and I are just too young and too old for such extended tent-sleeping (especially together!), according to me!! :)
I loved reading these four vacation posts, and I felt a bit chagrined that we weren't a little tougher like you...
ReplyDeleteThree weekends ago, we were to go to La Crosse to explore the Mississippi River and do some hiking with the kids. Well, it was supposed to rain all weekend, so we decided that was no good.
So we shifted our plans to the next weekend. When the next weekend came, it was going to rain and be COLD, so we nixed the trip yet again. I just can't quite see enjoying a cruise on a Mississippi River riverboat in the nasty weather we were having.
So... This weekend (as in yesterday and the day before) were to be it. We were finally going to La Crosse. And then... You guessed it. Cold and rain!
An outdoor vacation in La Crosse just wasn't going to happen. Instead, we started laying plans for a show-the-kids-Chicago, walk-around-downtown-and-maybe-see-some-museums this weekend.
And then we heard that the forecast included SNOW!!! I don't have any of the kids winter clothes out of storage, I don't know where the hats and boots are...
Needless to say, we totally wimped out and canceled our mini-vacation for the third weekend in a row.
Now that we have all that behind us, we have absolutely nothing planned for this coming weekend. It'll probably be lovely, and we'll stay home. Ha!

ReplyDeleteTwo words: Nonrefundable. Hotel. !!!
I've been wanting to go to LaCrosse too--maybe someday! But I say "go for it"--I really can't believe what a good time we had, given how horrible the weather really was! :)
